Building Digital Media Leaders (BDML): Free Courses at TIFF Bell Lightbox

Producers, Production Managers, Assistant Production Managers and Department Supervisors who are looking to advance in their careers in digital media are invited to attend a pilot program being offered by Sheridan College and Digital Media Industry of Ontario (DMIO, formerly known as Computer Animation Studios of Ontario) to be held at the TIFF Bell Lightbox this fall. The program is being generously supported by the Ontario Media Development Corporation (OMDC) on behalf of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport.

Building Digital Media Leaders – BDML – is a two day event that will cover three essential courses aimed at enhancing leadership capabilities: dynamic communications, leading teams, and proactive pipeline management. Registration details will be announced in July, for a September intake. For a limited time only, this program is being offered free of charge.

“Rapid advances in technology are creating exciting opportunities in film and television, game design, and interaction design,” says Sylvia Lowndes, Dean of the Faculty of Continuing and Professional Studies at Sheridan College. “Sheridan is in a unique position to respond. As one of Canada’s leading digital media postsecondary institutions, we have a deep-seeded appreciation for creative industries. We also have significant expertise in delivering professional education courses that can help people gain the skills and knowledge they need to stay current and advance in their life goals and careers.”

“Our industry has grown organically over the past two decades and more dramatically over the past five years,” says Neishaw Ali, President of Digital Media Industry Ontario (DMIO, formerly known as Computer Animation Studios Ontario, CASO). “It is very encouraging to see that our post-secondary education institutions have recognized this and are enhancing their curriculum. Even more importantly collaborating with the Industry to establish best practices, as they will be producing the future leaders of our community. We are extremely supportive of this initiative by Sheridan and look forward to our members’ participation.”

“By investing in programs like Building Digital Media Leaders, OMDC aims to encourage collaboration and foster new business partnerships that encourage growth across Ontario’s creative media industries,” says Karen Thorne-Stone, OMDC President and CEO. “It is our belief that this initiative will lead to innovative developments in content and technology, which in turn, will help to ensure that Ontario remains competitive on the world stage.”—

As one of Canada’s leading postsecondary institutions, Sheridan offers over 100 diploma, certificate, and bachelor degree programs. This September, Sheridan is launching two new Bachelor Degree programs – one in Interaction Design and another in Game Design. Sheridan’s aim is to become Ontario’s first university exclusively dedicated to undergraduate professional education – a model that will be based on applied learning and Sheridan’s renown for creativity and innovation. The model also focuses on meeting university accreditation requirements so that Sheridan graduates have more pathways to the continued learning that will underscore their personal, career, and industry success.

Digital Media Industry Ontario (DMIO, formerly known as the Computer Animation Studios of Ontario, CASO) is a non-profit association representing Computer Animation and Digital Visual Effects companies located in Ontario, Canada. DMIO’s mandate is to promote the interests of its members and to enlist the support of government and private sector partners with an interest in the growth of the computer animation and visual effects industry in Ontario.

Informal Discussion

As you are aware from the past and recent news, it seems as if there is much confusion and tension surrounding visual effects globally, our contribution, compensation and recognition leading to a viable and stable companies.

As a result, we are planning a community meeting to discuss this topic on Friday, March 8th at 9:45 am. Venue is being verified based on attendees. Please email Shirlyn@casont.ca your attendance and next week she will send you the location details. I wanted you to save the date as this is an important topic for our industry worldwide.

It will be an informal discussion amongst peers to share ideas and information and formulate a strategy if possible to help us all through these strange and interesting times.

As a start I would like to share some information that Colin Davies and Pete Denomme shared with us..

http://www.fxguide.com/featured/blood-chrome-a-possible-vfx-future/

This is the basic problem with the industry... http://www.animationmagazine.net/vfx/vfx-community-reacts-to-ang-lees-oscar-speech/
