This digital market ``Meet up`` hosted by CASO is being held on Friday, May 15th, 2015 at Corus Entertainment from 11 am -3 pm. The Event is designed to create opportunities for the Film and Television community graduating students, freelance and creative artists to meet studio representatives from across Ontario.
We are inviting you to participate in this inaugural event!
There is NO COST to attend this event filled with screenings and guest speakers from our
VFX & Animation Industry.
This is an opportunity for graduates, senior level students in the field, freelancers and artist to meet studios one-on-one, and studios to meet the community of artistic and technical talents that can help augment their team.
Due to a high demand for participation, we will be acknowledging participants on a first come, first serve basis!
*All participants will be provided with tables and chairs for the event!

Eggplant Pictures (formerly Optix) is a full-service post production, animation, visual effects and motion graphics boutique. The facility services a wide range of genres for feature films, television series, documentaries and commercials and houses artists who are industry leaders both technically and creatively.
Paul Moyer is a founding partner and has been the long standing client contact for nearly 20 years. He says, “While much has changed over the course of time it keeps things interesting. You figure out ways to adapt, and in some ways reinvent aspects of the business, to better compete in the game. There continues to be new technologies, work flows and services to offer and there are new team members joining the ranks and new client relationships being forged, so it's never a dull moment. At the same time it is also wonderful to work with certain members of our team for double digit spans of time and to provide services to many regular clients for decades.”
In 2014, change came in a big way. The Eggplant Collective (the award-winning original music composition, music supervision, editorial and licensing company) took greater ownership in the facility and Moyer returned as business partner. With the departure of founding partners, George and Atti Levai, there has been new management of the facility, new investment into infrastructure and some refreshing re-organization of suites and departments. For instance, four new offline editorial suites with shared storage were set up with multiple assistant editor stations, producer and supervisor desks, on their first floor space. They also renovated their penthouse space on the fourth floor, creating a new home for their animation department.

Does your business have a compelling new idea that crosses sectors and/or distribution platforms, involves non-traditional collaboration, or reimagines your operational model?
Have you received funding from any of these OMDC programs - OMDC Export Fund; OMDC Book Fund; OMDC Film Fund; OMDC Interactive Digital Media Fund; OMDC Magazine Fund?
The Collaboration and Innovation Fund (CIF) is a new funding opportunity from OMDC.
It’s a pilot program developed in response to ongoing changes in the marketplace, the continued blending of content across sectors and platforms, and evolving business models. The CIF will help transform innovative and entrepreneurial ideas into goods and services, and drive growth and productivity.
The CIF will be delivered in two phases. Participation in Phase One will be adjudicated through an Expression of Interest (EOI) application process. Successful Phase One applicants will participate in a project development cycle that will strengthen strategic and project plans.
Only Phase One participants will have the opportunity to apply for project financing in Phase Two.
The deadline for Phase One EOI applications is: Monday, March 30, 2015 by 5:00 pm
Guidelines and Application Process
Contact the OMDC to discuss your project at least 2 weeks in advance of the Phase One EOI deadline.
· Applications must be submitted via the OMDC Online Application Portal (OAP). Applications submitted by any other method will not be accepted. All applicants are strongly encouraged to commence their applications early should assistance be required.
· Before beginning an application, your company’s corporate information must be registered with the OAP. If you do not have a user account on OAP, please go to https://apply.omdc.on.ca and click on “Register”. For assistance, please see OMDC’s website for the “OAP Quick Start Guide”.
· Applicants who have a user account should ensure that relevant company information is up-to-date. Applicants that are already registered will see both the Phase One and Phase Two application deadlines in their dashboard. To start the application, click on “Start New Application” and follow the directions through the five step wizard to access the application form. Applicants are encouraged to start the application process well in ad vance of the deadline in case technical support is required. If you encounter problems setting up your Company’s corporate information, you can email firstname.lastname@example.org for assistance. This email address can also be used for any technical questions you have about the OAP.
Please note that this is a competitive process with the number and amount of awards contingent on total demand for funding and the program funds available.

In 2007, I first became involved with a newly formed Association: CASO. At that time, it was a group of studio owners who, the year before, wanted to organize an association to advocate and promote the industry;its founding members included Tom Turnbull (Rocket), Neil Williamson (Invisible), Ron Estey (CORE), Frank Falcone (Guru) and Dennis Berardi(Mr. X); Christa Tazzeo was then the one who put it all together and kept things on track.
Obviously, like the original founders, CASO is still around 7 years later, and still promoting and advocating on behalf of the visual effects and animation studios in Ontario. Our membership has grown substantially, as has our member services and presence worldwide under the stewardship of past Presidents including Neil Williamson, Michael Carter, Wes Lui, and Neishaw Ali; I can only hope to continue this trend of growth, and will rely heavily on our Director Shirlyn Antonio, and the present Board of Neishaw Ali (Spin), Wes Lui (House of Cool), Jamie Goodman (Guru), Judy Leung (Corus), Catherine Andrews (Rocket), Tavia Charlton (Masterkey) Bob Munroe and Steve Rich (Soho). A great group indeed.
As we move forward with the orgnaization, we do so at a time of strength in the industry; indeed, the past couple of years have witnessed the busiest times in Film and Television Production in Ontario, with our studios benefiting from the work created. We are thankful for the wonderful relations we have, and continue to have, with the Ontario Media Development Corporation, the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development, Toronto Film Office; and the same thanks to other organizations in Ontario, with whom we have close ties with, such as Film Ontario, the DGC, and Interactive Ontario.
We intend to continue this through:
- trade missions for VFX and Animation studios to key destinations and trade shows;
- promoting the high calibre of work performed here as well as the overall infrastructure;
- introduce production studios to members;
- develop relationships with organizations similar to CASO, in other countries;
- promote co-production opportunities;
- develop and further technological assistance through partnerships in Education and Innovation centres;
- ensure close relationships with related local organizations and associations
As an association we do face challenges, not the least of which is financial; at the moment, all internally generated activities are funded through membership dues - grants or other monies are specifically allocated to particular programs.CASO requires a great deal of effort and time, so for that reason, we will be aggressively pursuing sponsorship monies which will allow us to maintain and improve membership services and benefits. The CASO website will be key to the communication to members and to the transparency of the organization to the membership. Wes Lui has circulated a memo to all members about accessing the site to promote their studios and let us all share in the good news!
This promises to be a challenging year for CASO to ensure its relevency, its sustainability, membership services, and expansion to not just the GTA and Horsehoe, but to all of Ontario. With a dynamic Board, a great Manager, and with your help, we can only get better and better!
